What is the "Labs for Rainwater Society "?

In October 2015, Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX) called for applications for research and development projects related to "Designing a Sustainable Society through Multi-generational Co-creation."

The "Decentralized Water Management for a Sustainable Well-being Society" project, led by research group leader Prof. Yukihiro Shimatani, Kyushu University, was one of the projects selected.

The research group created to perform this research was named the "Labs for Rainwater Society."

What is the "Rainwater Society "?

"Rainwater society" is a concept proposed through this research, defined as follows.

"The rainwater society is a society with urban decentralized water subsystems which utilize rainwater without allowing it all to flow underground by capturing and storing rainwater as well as allowing it to penetrate the ground.  This is achieved through the collaboration of numerous people and organizations within the area, who take an active role in dealing with the rainfall.   Through the process of capturing, storing, systematically releasing, and utilizing rainwater, people interact and assist each other, organically linking water and greening, including people, and realizing a more beautiful, richer society."
